Friday: 8.5 miles AM: 0 miles PM: haverford jv invite 8.5 miles 7:0/pace pace did a trail for a warm up and cool down. when tom was handing out numbers, he told me to treat this as more of a workout than a race because i missed so much time two weeks ago and i haven't done anything significantly fast since paul short. he said to just treat the first three miles as a workout and see what i have the last mile. this really helped me relax because i was pretty nervous and unsure before the race. i had no idea what to expect because i have no indication of what i can and can't handle at this point. he didn't give me an exact pace goal, but i though 5:50 would be good for the first three miles since that was my workout pace before i got sick/injured. my first mile was in 5:42. i got caught up in the race and went out a little faster than i had originally wanted to, but i felt fine. i fell a little off pace the second mile because i lost focus of the race and i came through in 11:29 for a 5:53 second mile. i tried to just maintain my pace and focus during the third mile and try and stay in position for the last mile. i ran another 5:53 and came through in three miles in 17:18. i tried to start kicking once i hit three miles, but i still couldn't go that fast. i've lost a lot of fitness over the past few weeks with recent illness/injury, but i still managed to run another 5:42 for 23:00 overall. this is actually technically a 4 mile PR for me, even though i'm sure i've gone through faster for 4 miles at paul short and princeton last year. although, my four mile races last year were my worst races of the season. i'm actually fairly happy with how this went. this is one of the few xc races that i've ever run where i managed to run the last mile as fast as i ran the first mile. i didn't run the last mile as fast or as competitively as i would have liked, but i still have one more week until conferences. i may have lost a lot of my racing fitness, but i think i managed to retain at least some of my strength.
