Thursday: 9 miles AM: turkey trot 5K 9 miles ran a 5K at moorestown high school with xavier. i really had no expectations going into this race so i was just going to treat it as a workout effort. i knew beforehand i wasn't in shape to run a respectable 5K, so i tried to pace it out evenly. the course was really bad. it was very flat and involved a ton of really tight turns every 200-400m to keep the run on the high school campus. warmed up three miles and cooled down three miles. went out at what i thought was a moderate pace. it was hard to tell because a bunch of people, in typical fashion, tried to win the first 400m. eventually i settled in and came through the first mile in 5:30. i tried keeping this pace, but my calf started to cramp up and i had to slow it down. came through the second mile in 5:45. i got passed by a few people after the two mile mark, but i couldn't respond because my calves were too sore. i was a little disappointed after the race because i kind of just gave up. i didn't try to kick at all and i just cruised in for a 17:35 finish. overall, it wasn't that bad considering i didn't take this seriously, either before or during the race, but thats not the way i like to approach things. i'm more concerned about my calf soreness though. its going to be hard to run well consistently if my calves get annihilated after every workout or race. i was originally planning on doing plyos to strengthen them, but i realized it might not help because it would just perpetuate the soreness.
