Summary: wanted to lift today, but i was busy until 8 when the weight room closes, so i didn't get around to it. i was exhausted so i skipped core work and went to bed at 10:30. i'm an old man.
Summary: lifted and did core work. grace helped me stretch out my hamstring; the stretch my doctor showed me is really painful. we went swimming later and i couldn't even swim/float because my hamstring hurt too much, so i had to stay in the shallow end.
Summary: had to go into lab today, but there were no buses running so i had to walk there and back. my hamstring is still sore/in pain from stretching yesterday (i only did two stretches and stretched for a total of maybe 5 minutes. not a very good sign) so it made the walk pretty unpleasant.
Summary: lifted and did core. tried calling my doctor to see when i'm getting an mri, but he never called me back.
Summary: my doctor finally got back to me and said that the reason they didn't call was because my insurance company rejected my "appeal" to get an mri. what the fuck do i have insurance for if they don't cover medical tests? my hamstring is messed up to the point where it hurts to walk, run, stand for too long, sit for too long, etc., but somehow that isn't enough for the insurance company to say maybe that should get fixed. in case it wasn't obvious, i'm pretty pissed. my doctor said he would call them one-on-one to discuss it.

Rob is pretty expensive, but still cheaper than paying for an MRI out of pocket if thats what my current doctor is expecting.

Summary: lifted and did core. i called my doctor again for the third time asking about the status of my MRI and physical therapy stuff and left a pretty angry voicemail. he called back later in the day and said he called my insurance company and i can now get an MRI. i'll probably get it next week, if things go well.

Summary: woke up and did core, 4x20 pushups, and stretched. i'm fed up with not running/my insurance company and doctor/hamstring not working, so i decided to try to run today just to see how it felt. its the first time i ran in 3 months and my quads have shrunken pretty substantially. i probably haven't gained any weight though, if anything it would be a few pounds from lifting. obviously, i felt really shitty. i've been battling an upper respiratory infection for the past two weeks, which added to the fun. my hamstring hurt, but it wasn't as bad as it used to be during spring track. my quads were really sore after running. even though i've been doing a lot of lifting, i've only been doing upper body since i don't want my right leg to be stronger than my left since i don't think doing leg lifts with a busted hamstring is advisable.

Summary: got out of work early and lifted and did some core. i had my MRI today, after almost a month of waiting. i scheduled my next doctor's appointment before even getting the MRI just because i knew it would be a pain in the ass. it took over an hour, which i was not expecting. towards the end, they said i had only two more scans to go but then when i thought it was over (after those two scans), they said "actually, we should do one more", which sounded somewhat ominous. i have an appointment with my doctor on Friday, so we'll see what the situation is.

Summary: ran again today. my quads were still sore from saturday. its going to be a long battle to get back in to any kind of shape. my hamstring hurt today much more than it did on saturday. for some reason, it was feeling relatively fine the past few days so i thought maybe it was improving, but i guess that was wishful thinking. saw jossi, gus, and chick on the trail too. its nice to see goats while running past each other instead of when i'm walking past them and they are running.

Summary: saw my doctor today. i was there for a total of 10 minutes and he told me my MRI showed no tear and no other hamstring abnormalities, which is good, but we still don't know what the problem is and what to target with physical therapy. he gave me a script for a second MRI for my lower back that was already approved by the insurance company so i didn't have to deal with that shit again. i scheduled it for tomorrow morning to get it over with. he said that a lot of runners (according to him) have back problems that doesn't result in back pain, but manifests itself in the form of leg pain. i haven't decided if this makes sense yet. when i first started lifting this summer, i tried to do some lower back exercises and I couldn't because my back was too tight, but i thought that was just from walking 7 miles to and from work for three days.
Summary: lifted and did core. i went home for the weekend to bring some stuff home from my apartment. my dad and brother are both big on weightlifting, so we have a mini home gym in my basement. my dad showed me some more exercises to do since the repertoire i'm working with now is getting old and it is no longer difficult despite increased weight. also, i have really strong shoulders and weak pectorals, so he showed me some more pectoral exercises to even it out. he also helped me stretch out my hamstring. the stretch involves pushing my leg as far as it can go and then i push down against his hand and he resists. this used to hurt a lot and be really difficult, but now it isn't as bad, which is encouraging.
Summary: ran a road loop around my house. my hamstring still hurts and it still feels like there is a ball of scar tissue in my leg hindering my range of motion, but it feels like that knot has shrunken significantly over the past few weeks. i have decided to unofficially start trying to run. i don't want to overdo it, so i'll run every other day next week. this is contingent on my work schedule because next week will be very busy. i'm helping almost all of the members of my lab with their experiments, so i think they are all planning on giving me a shitload to do before i leave.
Summary: did a short run before work. i feel slightly less out of shape than last week, although that could just be because running doesn't feel as weird anymore. my hamstring didn't hurt that much after the run, but hurt during it.
