Summary: I stopped writing a running log a few weeks ago because it stopped being helpful. normally, i keep a log because it keeps me honest about my training and helps me see what I need to change. most of all, it helps me see how my fitness is progressing. i can see the workouts and races pile up and know that I'm getting in better shape. however, since i only raced once this season and I didn't do any workouts for over three weeks, it started to be a source of stress rather than something helpful. i was logging my lack of fitness rather than my training. when i stopped writing it down, i was able to focus on the day-to-day aspect of training instead of the long term goal, which was actually helpful in this situation. i'll use the rest of this entry as a wrap up of my thoughts on conferences, my season, and what my running plans are from here. my performance at conferences was actually surprisingly good. i didn't know how good it was until the day after my race. i didn't have a single good hurdle the entire race and i still ran a 59.72, which is only the third time i've broken 60 in four years of racing the hurdles. this still isn't a fast time and not nearly as well as i would run were i actually good at hurdles, but i was still .3 seconds out of the finals after a really shitty training season. i basically ran this season off of left-over indoor fitness. i hate the idea of "with all things considered, it was good", but it might apply in this situation. i put myself out there and i did everything i could for my team and thats really i can ask. i didn't get the result that i wanted, but overall it was a decent performance. the team performance was incredible. it was such a great meet to watch. there were so many good team stories going on that its hard to mention them all. a lot of attention has been given to Dave's great conference meet and it honestly still isn't enough. he had a great meet and he gave everything he had for every race. it was really inspiring to watch. the sprint team did a fantastic job (when was the last time we won the 4x200 indoors and the 4x100 outdoors in the same year?). seeing James run a 49.xx 4x400 leg and seeing Jon Yellets run a 50.8 in the 400 with only one hamstring working in the last 150m were also highlights. as many people have already said, the 5k was just incredible. i could go on, but i'll limit myself. it was a great team redemption from indoors and i was thrilled to be a part of it. overall, i think my season as a whole was a pretty big failure. it started off with a groin injury and i never fully recovered from it. the groin injury lasted for a while and because my groin was so tender, i couldn't do my usual hamstring stretches and by the end of my season my hamstring was a serious problem. it was just as bad if not worse than last year towards the end. i tried not to talk too much about it because i didn't want Tom or Bob to worry about it. i only did a handful of workouts throughout the season and only one or two in the last month of the season. i felt like i lost a lot of fitness, although i still managed to run somewhat well at the end of the season. its really a shame because i think i would have had a great season if i hadn't gotten hurt early on. i'm historically much better in outdoor track than indoors because i don't have to deal with tight turns and racing is much easier because you have longer straightaways to work with. i think i could have run a few fast 800s, but at this point i wouldn't run anyway near as fast as i could have or even as fast as i did indoors, so i think its time to hang it up for the season. if i have any more thoughts on my season, maybe i'll post them later. i'm not really sure what i want to do after this as far as running. part of me wants to keep competing because i think i still have a lot to prove and that i was only scratching the surface of what i am capable of during indoors of this year. at one point, Tom thought i was in shape to run 1:55 on a flat track, but as he often says, "potential just means you haven't done shit yet". ultimately, i think it would best for me to take a break from running and start up running in a few weeks. my hamstring is still fairly painful so i'll start doing my stretches again in the meantime so when i do start running it won't be painful. in the meantime, i think i'll focus pretty heavily on core work and lifting so i can stay in shape, because its something new to try, and because i need something physical to do. when i do start running again, it will probably only be 30 or so miles a week just to get some mileage in. i have no idea if it will turn into running workouts or trying to get in racing shape, but we'll see.
Summary: lifted and did core before running. just wanted to get out and run for a bit. actually didn't feel that bad. hamstring didn't hurt at all, which was nice.
